Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
How
many uses will I get out of each vial?
A: There are over 550 drops in
a 2-dram vial. For tasting purposes, a 1-dram vial would have
been sufficient to learn and understand the flavors. However,
the larger, 2-dram vial is easier to hold in your hand and is
less likely to tip over.
Q:
What is the shelf life that each vial will offer while still
providing the same initial powerful scent?
A: We have samples stored at room
temperature that are still potent after 4 years.
Q:
Can I use the samples to cook with?
A: No. The samples were designed
so the flavors will not overwhelm your palate, so they are not
strong enough to use in cooking.
Q:
If someone is allergic to a certain food, will this product
have any adverse effects on their reactions?
A: There is an Allergy Warning
label on each vial. The samples are made from the true essential
oils of the specific flavor and should NOT be used by anyone
with food allergies.
Q:
If for some reason, a vial's contents were taken in excess,
could any harm be foreseen?
A: No. Unless a person has a food
allergy, there is no potential for harm from the liquid samples.
Q:
How are the contents of the vials created? (ie. All natural
extracts, chemicals, ect.)
A: With over 30 years of experience,
Flavor Sciences, Inc. of Stamford, CT, was chosen to create
the kits. They combine the finest essential oils with a neutral
oil to produce the flavor samples. The kits are assembled and
shipped by Flavor Sciences.
Q:
What is the youngest age you would suggest to be the limit for
using this product?
A: My nieces were 5 and 7 when
they tried the samples. They had a blast tasting all the flavors
and were able to identify the basil sample because it grows
in their herb garden. Children are very curious and love guessing
games but this is not a toy and should be used with adult supervision.
For more fun and educational activities, try the websites on
our "Links" page that have taste and smell experiments
for kids.
Q:
Once opened, do the products need to be kept refrigerated?
A: The kits may be kept at room
temperature, but refrigeration will prolong the potency of the
samples. High heat will taint the flavor and reduce the potency
of the samples. Do not leave your kit in the car or sitting
in the sun on warm days.
Q:
Would you recommend these kits to people who would like to practice
with them at home but are not culinary professionals or students?
A: Anyone who likes to cook will
benefit by using the kits. Once you understand a flavor, you
will be able to use it. If you doubt this, just think about
flavor combinations that you like and don't like. Say you are
making mashed potatoes and want to jazz up the flavor. You might
add garlic, onions or parmesan cheese. How about adding vanilla
extract? Why not? You don't have to taste vanilla mashed potatoes
to know you probably won't like them because your brain knows
what vanilla tastes like and what mashed potatoes taste like
and they don't go together. See how smart you are already! Now
you can raise your culinary I.Q. by learning new flavors and
start making your own creative combinations.
Q:
Who decided what flavors to use in the kits?
A: My former culinary instructors
(see "About Us" page) and Chef Chris Whirlow helped
decide which flavors to use in the kit. We included the culinary
herbs and spices that are used most often plus additional flavors
that we thought creative cooks would enjoy.
